Brief foreword:
I struggled writing this. I wasn’t sure how I wanted to talk about this, the first drafts were closer to an essay including stats about the population and a brief history of our city, but it felt impersonal and cold. Ultimately, I chose to write a letter, because, if you’re reading this it was meant for you.

Dear reader, Won’t you please stay?
I know it’s not easy. Between the heat, the cost of living, the corrupt local governments, the never ending construction, the apathy…the traffic. It feels like every day another piece of Miami is being carved up and sold at our expense. With the growing threat of I.C.E. under the Trump regime , the future of Miami is more uncertain now than it ever has been. So why stay?
Miami has few named heroes and even less who are actually deserving of the title. Even so, some of the smartest, talented, and driven individuals I’ve ever met, I met here. That is our greatest resource. You. Yes, you, are our greatest resource. You are invaluable. Your ideas, your drive, your knowledge. Miami needs you! Miami has an untapped reservoir of raw potential but it has no direction, no unity, no common purpose. It is up to you to stand firm, shoulder to shoulder with the person next to you, to create the community. Nurture the culture, we so desperately need, and defend it to the last man. I ask you again, please stay?
Stay because in spite of all the chaos and uncertainty a culture continues to try and bloom. Stay because the next generation of Miami deserves to grow up in a city that is proud, full of traditions, and community. Stay because together we can build something the world hasn’t yet seen…but we can only do it together, we can only do it if you stand with us.
Sincerely,
A concerned Miamian.

P.S. fuck I.C.E.
